Hey, wanna get a coke?

cokeWhat’s your generic word for “a soft drink”? Everywhere I lived growing up and in young adulthood, it was coke.  No matter that I preferred Dr Pepper, or others were fans of 7-up, root beer or even the cursed Pepsi — the call was, “let’s get a coke.”

This map bears that out.  Shelby County, Tenn. (Memphis), Madison County, Ala. (Huntsville), and Hamilton County, Tenn. (Chattanooga) all call ’em cokes, in a big way. Manatee and Sarasota counties in Florida, where I lived in the late ’80s/early ’90s, are coke areas, too, if not as strong as in Tennessee. (Although in my experience there, you’d offer someone a coke, and they’d say, “No thanks — I like Mountain Dew”, or whatever.)

Looks like the counties in the Nashville area are big on coke, especially Sumner, Rutherford and Williamson, My county, Cheatham, is the most coke-less. I need to work on my neighbors. Maybe I’ll buy ’em a coke.

  1. Lol Kevin, I remember you lecturing me on this back when I was new to Nashville and made some eyebrow-raising reference to pop…
